Tenth Submarine Flotilla (Royal Navy)

The Tenth Submarine Flotilla was a formation of submarines of the Royal Navy.

History

The flotilla was created in November or December of 1914, using a depot ship and three submarines pared off of the Seventh Submarine Flotilla.

December, 1914

The initial roster is comprised of ships taken from the Seventh Flotilla. It would, like the Seventh, operate initially in Home and Atlantic Waters.[1][2]

January, 1915

Alecto has left for the Eighth Submarine Flotilla. To replace her, Forth has joined from the Third Submarine Flotilla.

Meanwhile, the submarine strength continues to grow at the expense of the Seventh Submarine Flotilla, as C 28, C 29 and C 30 have arrived to bring the strength here to a depot ship and six submarines.[3][4]

March, 1915

The powers-that-be are still struggling to find the proper balance between the two flotillas, as now C 19 and C 20 have been sent back to the Seventh Submarine Flotilla. The strength here is now one depot ship and four submarines.[5]

June, 1915

W 1 has joined from the Sixth Submarine Flotilla, and W 2 from some undiscovered posting. The strength here is now one depot ship and six submarines.[7][8]

October, 1915

C 29 has been removed, having been lost to a mine on 29 August. The strength is now one depot ship and five submarines.[10]

Beginning in November, Forth would be designated as "Parent Ship", if that designation has any distinct meaning. This roster would apply until March, 1916.[11]

March, 1916

W 3 has been joined from some unknown prior assignment, bringing the strength back to one depot ship and six submarines.[12]

It was noted in July, 1916 that Vulcan was to be coming from the Seventh Submarine Flotilla to relieve Forth as parent ship.[13]

August, 1916

Vulcan has arrived from the Seventh Submarine Flotilla. Forth has gone to the Eighth Submarine Flotilla while submarines D 1 and D 6 have come from that flotilla. C 28 and C 30 have moved out to join the Fourth Submarine Flotilla and the "W" class boats have all departed, as they have been given to Italy. The flotilla is now one depot ship and three submarines.[14][15][16]

September, 1916

The vessels of the flotilla are re-designated as the Third Submarine Flotilla, retaining the same posting, and the Flotilla designated as the Tenth is a new one supporting the Grand Fleet alongside the Eleventh Submarine Flotilla. Termagant has come to assist from the Tenth Destroyer Flotilla. E 44 may be new in service. G 8 has been filched from the Eighth Submarine Flotilla, G 10 from the Eleventh Submarine Flotilla, and the other "G" submarines are probably new in service. The flotilla is now one depot ship, a destroyer and seven modern submarines.[17][18]

October, 1916

E 44 has left to join the Ninth Submarine Flotilla. Lucia now bears a Captain (S). The flotilla is now one depot ship, a destroyer and six modern submarines.[19]

November, 1916

E 44 has been stolen back from the Ninth Submarine Flotilla, and E 39 has also joined from an undiscovered posting. The new G 13 has also joined. Destroyer Medea, recently of the Tenth Destroyer Flotilla, has also come to help. The flotilla is now one depot ship, two destroyers and nine modern submarines.[20][21]

E 49 has been dropped, having been lost to a mine on 12 March. The flotilla is now one depot ship, two destroyers and nine modern submarines.[25]

July, 1917

C 19, C 22 and C 34, formerly of the Ninth Submarine Flotilla are now listed as "tenders temporarily to Lucia", and so may not actually be operating with the flotilla. E 40, however, is newly joined without qualification. She seems to be new in the Navy List. The flotilla is now one depot ship, two destroyers and ten (or thirteen) submarines.[27][28]
