The people of the Dreadnought Era had a profound impact on the scale and nature of the Great War.

The British Royal Navy was arguably the greatest catalyst for technological change at sea in the thirty years following the passage of the Naval Defence Act of 1889, and this in large part was driven by its officers. These men presently comprise the majority of coverage on our site, owing to Simon Harley's interest in the Royal Navy. Certainly, other navies possessed imaginative and forceful officers, and we hope Simon's work for the Royal Navy is soon matched in other services by other editors.

Scope

We focus on those men who served in the rough period of 1890 to 1930. Thus, you will find many very famous naval persons who have little material here or none at all. We'd like to "have it all", but need to focus our efforts.

We fully understand that we are also presently very skewed toward the British and American personalities. If you would like to help us broaden our coverage by becoming an editor, please contact us.

A list of the various ranks of the commissioned officers of the Royal Navy may be seen at this page: Royal Navy Officer Ranks.
