Stephen Harry Tolson Arliss

Vice-Admiral (retired) Stephen Harry Tolson Arliss, C.B., D.S.O. (11 July, 1895 – 6 November, 1954) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Unusually, Arliss has "(Independent)" written in where his guardian upon entry was to be noted. Upon passing out of the training ship H.M.S. Britannia on 15 May 1913, he was appointed to the battleship Hercules, in which he served until 15 October 1915.

After a month in the heavy cruiser Berwick, Arliss was sent to join the sweeping sloop Snowdrop on 22 November, 1915. In mid-May 1916 he was sent to hospital in Drogheda[?] Hospital following an accident whose nature is illegible. In June, he was thanked for lending valuable assistance to the Officer Commanding Troops, Drogheda in countering the Irish Rebellion.

Arliss left Snowdrop when he was appointed to a Torpedo Control course at Vernon on 4 December, 1916.

On 5 January 1917 he was appointed to the destroyer Surprise. He transferred to the destroyer Lance at some point. In March of 1917 he transferred to Skilful and then to Miranda soon thereafter.

On 10 September 1917 he was appointed to Viking. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 November, 1917, he was superseded in his appointment when he suffered a leg fracture involving both his tibia and fibula on 11 December 1917. He found himself in Chatham Royal Naval Hospital for treatment. He was found fit on 14 January, 1918.

Arliss commanded the trawler Arthur Lessimore from 28 December, 1920 to May of that year, at which time he became her first Lieutenant. On 5 August, he was appointed to the sweeping sloop Wistaria.

On 7 June 1923 he was appointed to the destroyer Wivern. He remained in her until late 1925, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 November, 1925.

Arliss was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1931.

Arliss was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1937.

World War II

Appointed to the flotilla leader Napier on 16 September 1940 to help prepare the ship for completion and commissioning.

Arliss would commanded Napier at the Battle of Crete.

Arliss was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 5 July, 1946.

Arliss retired on 29 November, 1949 and was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 1 May, 1950.
