H.M.S. Bittern was one of forty "C" class destroyers built for the Royal Navy — a "30 knotter".

Service

While undergoing a three-hour speed test over a measured mile on 5 January 1899, Bittern suddenly swerved toward a sand bank without apparent reason, prompting Lieutenant and Commander Blunt to order "full speed astern". The destroyer touched ground and its hull was stressed to such an extent that minor leaking occurred, but greater calamity was averted.[9]

In 1917, she collided with T.B. 104. Lieutenant R.N.R. in Command Ernest Kirkbank Irving was cautioned.[10]

Bittern was lost when she was rammed by a steamer in dense fog at 3.15 a.m. on 3 April, 1918. There may have been no survivors.[11]

Captains

Dates of appointment are provided when known.

The Navy List for April, 1910 says that William Bowen Mackenzie was placed in command on 10 January, 1910 but his service record indicates he was given Brazen.[46]
