Vice-Admiral (retired) Brien Michael Money (11 September, 1880 – 4 April, 1939) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War. His career would see him in command of a considerable number of warships in action, from the Battle of Dogger Bank through command of the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Eagle in the late 1920s.

Life & Career

Money was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 February, 1901.[1]

In 1904, Money collided with T.B. 82 while in command of her sister, T.B. 86. This misadventure drew Their Lordships' severe displeasure. This would prove to be an exception, as Money's service record is remarkably clear of anything but positive evaluations. He created the best sort of impression in his superiors.[2]

In 1909, Money was thanked for the zeal he demonstrated in inventing an "air blast mechanism" which was not adopted.[3]

Money was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1912.[4]

Great War

Money was appointed in command of the destroyer Acheron of the First Destroyer Flotilla on 31 March, 1914. His command would be eventful, as he commanded her at the Battle of Heligoland Bight on 28 August, 1914 and at the Battle of Dogger Bank on 24 January, 1915.

On 10 March, 1915, Money in Acheron was commanding a division of destroyers which succeeded in sinking U 12, earning him the commendation of Captain (D) William Frederick Blunt for his promptitude in the action and, later, a letter on vellum expressing the approbation of the Admiralty. Also in March, Money was thanked by the Board of Trade for rescuing the crew of a lighter.

Money remained in Acheron until being appointed to the flotilla leader Botha on 26 January, 1916. On 8 June, he was appointed in temporary command of Fearless. This sequence kept him from being at the Battle of Jutland, which is unfortunate, as his experience is emphatically the sort that would have been helpful.[5]

Money was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1917.[6]

He was made captain of the flotilla leader Seymour in January, 1918 and served as Captain (D) of the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla through the German High Sea Fleet's surrender in November, 1918.

Post-War

He would remain in the Navy after the war and was appointed Captain of the light cruiser Concord for fifteen months, starting in June, 1921. After an interlude, this was followed by a stint in command of the Eclipse Class second class protected cruiser Dido from early 1923 to mid 1924.

In May 1924, Money was appointed as Director of Torpedoes and Mining (Royal Navy). Money would serve in the role until he was appointed as commander of Eagle, between 1 October 1926 and 1 June 1928.[7]

After being diagnosed with heart arrhythmia (recorded as "disordered action of heart") in 1929, Money was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 17 February, 1931.[8]

Money was admitted to Haslar Hospital suffering from heart pain in late 1938. He would die the following year.
