Captain George Arthur Wallace Voelcker, (26 October, 1898 – 23 October, 1943) served in the Royal Navy. One of his Service Records has "Wallace" as "Wallis".

Life & Career

Voelcker passed out of the Training Establishment in August 1914 and was appointed to the pre-dreadnought battleship Prince of Wales, and participated in the ship's 2nd [illeg] boat during the Gallipoli landing of 25 April, 1915. When the Prince of Wales paid off on 5 April, 1917, he went to Portsmouth for a ten-day Torpedo Control Course at H.M.S. Vernon. He next served in the destroyer Legion from 17 May, to 5 November.[1]

Having applied to serve in submarines in October, 1917, Voelcker was sent to Dolphin for two and a half months instruction in submarines. Through the rest of the waer, he served in submarines attached to Vulcan and Dolphin, including N 1, C 20 and H 4.[2]

Voelcker was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 February, 1919.[3]

Voelcker was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 February, 1927. When his command of L 53 expired in late 1928, he was loaned to serve in the Royal Australian Navy for two years, taking passage in Canberra. When he reverted to R.N. service in October 1930, he took a submarine course in H.M.S. Alecto and then was appointed in command of the submarine Perseus.[4]

Voelcker was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1933.[5]

World War II

Voelcker was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1939.[6]

Voelcker was appointed in command of Charybdis on 27 June 1942, vice Mackintosh. He was killed, along with over 80% of the crew when she was sunk by German torpeod boats off Britanny.
