H.M.S. Haughty was one of thirty-six 27 Knotters, early Torpedo Boat Destroyers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s.
Her size, speed and condition rendered her outmoded before the war, and she was broken up in 1912.
Service
The crew of Haughty turned over to Swordfish at Chatham on 4 March, 1897.[6]
Haughty replaced Janus in the Medway Instructional Flotilla in mid-July, 1898,[7] but after about one week returned to Sheerness with her machinery disabled. She was towed down to Chatham by the dockyard tug Grinder.[8]
Haughty arrived at Sheerness with six other destroyers from the North Sea on 1 October, 1901.[9]
In late 1904, Lively collided with Haughty during manoeuvres. Commander Charles Penrose Rushton Coode was admonished over the incident, though his connection to the misadventure is not clear. Perhaps he was in charge of the flotilla.[10]
Haughty was one of seventeen destroyers of the Reserve Division which left Sheerness on 1 July, 1905 for Spithead under the overall command of Commander R. G. Gregory in H.M.S. Spitfire.[11]
She and sixteen other destroyers of the Reserve Division arrived at Sheerness on 13 July 1905 and proceeded to Chatham.[12]
Haughty was one of twenty-seven T.B.Ds. of the Portsmouth Flotilla to participate in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1909.[13]
