Eustace La Trobe Leatham

Vice-Admiral Eustace La Trobe Leatham, C.B., Royal Navy (3 August, 1870 – 1 September, 1935) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

On 28 January, 1892, Leatham was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant, dated 14 June, 1890.[1]

Leatham was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 13 November, 1893.[2]

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1909.[3]

On 5 January, 1911, he was made captain of the armoured cruiser King Alfred. The appointment lasted precisely one year.

On 30 June 1912, Leatham was appointed in command of the light cruiser Gloucester[4]

Great War

Leatham was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Euryalus in August 1914, remaining with her until October.

Leatham was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Cochrane on 28 February, 1916, temporarily from 8 February.[5] He would command her, as part of the Second Cruiser Squadron at the Battle of Jutland, and write the ship's after-action report.

He assumed command of Queen Elizabeth in December 1916, soon handing her off to Chatfield in February.

On 15 September 1916, he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) dated 31 May.[6]

Post-War

Leatham was appointed Captain of the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth on 2 February, 1919. He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 26 March, 1920.[7] He was succeeded at Dartmouth by Captain Francis A. Marten on 2 February, 1921.[8] He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 July.[9] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 24 November, 1925.[10]
