George Sarsfield Walsh (b)

Commander (retired) George Sarsfield Walsh, R.N. (13 October, 1888 – 10 December, 1942) was an officer in the Royal Navy. His page bears a "(b)", as his father had the same name.

Life & Career

Born in Plymouth.

As a Midshipman, he served in the pre-dreadnoughts Formidable, Prince George and the Illustrious.

His return to College in August 1909 was delayed, as he had influenza.

Walsh was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1910.

Walsh was appointed in command of the submarine A 9 on 20 February, 1914.

In December 1916, after three wartime submarine commands, he reverted to General Service and served in the light cruiser Canterbury.

Walsh retired as a Lieutenant-Commander in 1920 and was promoted to the rank of Commander on the Retired List in 1928.

He died at Durban while serving in World War II.
