H.M.S. Canterbury was one of four Cambrian class light cruisers completed in 1915 and 1916.
Service
Canterbury was completed just in time to participate at the Battle of Jutland, where she screened the Third Battle Cruiser Squadron along with Chester, who was similarly detached from the Third Light Cruiser Squadron. Lucky to escape the considerable damage sustained by Chester, Canterbury fought at the Action of 23 July, 1916, a running night action where she pursued a superior force of German destroyers.
Canterbury was fitted with a director in March, 1918. This alteration required her pole mast to be replaced with a tripod mast for greater rigidity.[7]
She recommissioned at Portsmouth on 15 November, 1919.[8]
In mid-1920, Canterbury was to receive 21-in Mark II***** S.L. torpedoes.[9]
Canterbury re-commissioned on 3 January, 1925.[10]
She was again re-commissioned on 11 November, 1926 and on 11 November 1928 for duty with the Second Cruiser Squadron in the Atlantic Fleet.[11][12]
The cruiser was reduced to Reserve on 30 January, 1931.[13]
She was re-commissioned in Reserve at Chatham on 24 August, 1932.[14]
She was finally transferred to Dockyard Control at Sheerness on 1 December, 1933[15] and sold in July 1934.
