H.M.S. Algerine was one of two Phoenix Class screw sloops completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
Commander Ewen Francis Domville was appointed in command of Algerine on the China Station on 11 February, 1897. In November, he was cautioned after grounding her through an error in judgment. On 2 March, 1898 he was invalided from command, suffering from nervous exhaustion. Edmond John Warre Slade was appointed in command.
She was lent to the Canadian Government in 1917.
