Captain (retired) Herbert Gerald Briggs, D.S.O., R.N. (4 May, 1883 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Briggs underwent examinations in July, 1897 and gained entrance to Britannia's term of August, 1897, his 1307 marks placing him twenty-fourth among the sixty-three candidates accepted as naval cadets.[1]
He would obtain second-class certificates in Gunnery and Torpedoes, and a third-class in Navigation.
Briggs was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1905.
In 1912, Briggs was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal for saving life from drowning.[2]

In May 1918, he was appointed to the armoured cruiser Shannon, as X.O. under Captain Arthur C. S. H. D'Aeth who reported Briggs as a "a most excellent & loyal 2nd in command."
Retired at his own request on 1 October 1922, he was promoted to the rank of Captain on 4 May 1928.
