He was appointed in command of the convoy sloop Andromeda on 1 March 1904.[4]

Great War

Fisher wrote to Churchill on 23 January, 1915: "We have struck oil in Admiral Ommanney. Oliver tells me he knows more abt handling a Fleet than anyone in the Navy! Why is he not in a Battle Squadron then? Put him in place of Warrender—Warrender to Greenwich—Bayly to Monitors—Jerram to Mines like Ommanney—let those ideas germinate!"[9]

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, Ommanney was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 9 August.[10] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 2 July, 1917.[11] He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) on 1 January, 1919.[12]
