Captain (retired) Herbert Gerald Briggs, D.S.O., R.N. (4 May, 1883 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Briggs underwent examinations in July, 1897 and gained entrance to Britannia's term of August, 1897, his 1307 marks placing him twenty-fourth among the sixty-three candidates accepted as naval cadets.[1]
He would obtain second-class certificates in Gunnery and Torpedoes, and a third-class in Navigation.
Briggs was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1905.
In 1912, Briggs was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal for saving life from drowning.[2]
Briggs was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1913.[Fact Check]
Briggs was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1916.
His D.S.O. was for patrol services, gazetted 27[?] May 1917.
He was reported sick on 10 October 1917 and likely to be out of service for six weeks. Accordingly, he ceded command of Ness. On the 29th, his diagnosis was spelled out as being gonorrhea. Initially cleared for shore duty only, he was finally fit for any duty on 30 April, 1918. He was appointed to the first class protected cruiser Blake for two months, where he was executive officer to Captain George W. McO. Campbell. In May 1918, he was appointed to the armoured cruiser Shannon, as X.O. under Captain Arthur C. S. H. D'Aeth who reported Briggs as a "a most excellent & loyal 2nd in command."
Retired at his own request on 1 October 1922, he was promoted to the rank of Captain on 4 May 1928.
