Captain (retired) Ralph Wilmot Wilkinson, R.N., Retired (4 May, 1884 – 22 December, 1936) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Ningpo, China.
He was appointed to the new battleship King Edward VII on 7 February, 1905 and just nine days later was discharged to the depot by Captain Leveson who reported that Wilkinson was "unfit for position as senr. member of gunroom mess of large ship." One has to wonder what unrecorded detail underlies that turn of events. On 22 February, Leveson was appointed to the depot ship Hecla, where he would serve for over a year. While in Hecla in October, 1905, Wilkinson was presented with a Chinese tray with an Imperial monogram for saving life.[1]
Wilkinson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1906.[2]
Wilkinson was appointed in command of the destroyer Fame on 7 October, 1912.[3]
Great War
On 10 December, 1913, Wilkinson was appointed in command of the destroyer Ribble.[4]
Wilkinson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1914.[5]
An appointment in command of Narborough on 17 October, 1917 was cancelled.[6]
On 21 November, 1917, he was appointed in command of the destroyer Verulam.[7]
On 4 July, 1918 he was admitted to Granton Hospital with influenza. On 1 August, he returned to Verulam.[8]
Wilkinson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1918.[9]
Post-War
On 12 November, 1919, Wilkinson was appointed in command of the destroyer Seawolf.[10]
On 6 July, 1922, Speedy lost a torpedo and a Court of Enquiry found that Wilkinson was at fault to a minor extent.[11]
The ship was lost in a collision with a tug in the Sea of Marmora in September, 1922. Wilkinson was found to be to blame only in small degree.[12]
After being superseded in command of the convoy sloop Chrysanthemum in August, 1926, Wilkinson took some unpaid time and then was appointed for work with the Naval Intelligence Division, vice Lovett Cameron on 15 December, 1926. He was superseded in this last appointment on 16 December, 1929.[13]
Wilkinson was promoted to the rank of Captain as he was placed on the Retired List on 16 June, 1930.[14]
