H.M.S. Cygnet was one of the Royal Navy's eleven "D" class destroyers.
Service
In late 1899, she was part of the Medway Destroyer/Instructional Flotilla.[8]
She was one of twenty-seven T.B.Ds. of the Portsmouth Flotilla to participate in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1909.[9]
In mid-1913, she was serving in The Nore.[10]
Lt. Orrell Bake was appointed in command in June, 1914. The ship would suffer three collisions under his oversight. In 1914 he collided with S.S. Glenbrook during a mooring operation. Luckily, no serious damage resulted. However, on 10 December 1914, Cygnet was damaged on entering Felixstowe Dock. This elicited a caution for Bake.[11]
In March 1915, Cygnet collided with Brighton Queen. Orrell Bake was finally superseded in command of the destroyer as a result of this third misadventure and sent to work in a cruiser.[12]
Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. Frederick John Thompson replaced Bake, and commanded the ship until November 1916.
