Life & Career
Robinson was born in Greenwich, the son of John L. Robinson, a chaplain in the Royal Navy.[1]
Robinson entered the Royal Navy with the January, 1897 intake term at H.M.S. Britannia, passing in tenth of sixty-three in order of merit with 1449 marks in the competitive entrance examinations.[2]
Robinson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 August, 1903.[3]
Robinson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 August, 1911.[4]
Robinson married Edith Gladys on 8 July, 1913.[5]
Robinson was specially promoted to the rank of Commander on 20 April, 1915 in recognition of distinguished service on the night of 18 April when he commanded a force in boats armed with 14-in torpedoes which torpedoed the stranded submarine E 15, thereby preventing her capture in a serviceable condition.[6]
In light of his demonstrated skills in torpedo operations from small craft, Robinson was appointed in command of C.M.Bs. on 14 June, 1918. He kept at this work through the end of the war.[7]
Post-War
Robinson's final stint in command of C.M.Bs. ended when he was appointed to Iron Duke on 22 July, 1919, serving as Fleet Torpedo Officer.[8][9]
Robinson was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1920.[10]
Robinson was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 3 January, 1933 and placed on the Retired List the next day in accordance with Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[11]
World War II
Robinson was called up as Commodore of Convoy to serve as Commodore R.N.R. Second Class on 24 August, 1939. On 14 November, he was appointed to Eaglet II for work with the Liverpool Convoy Pool.
He was found unfit for duty due to an enlarged prostate and reverted to Retired List on 22 September, 1941, but on 2 June, 1942 was back in service in command of Cressy as Naval officer in Charge, Dundee, serving in the rank of Captain. He served until late 1944 and was eventually placed back into retirement on 23 December, 1944.[12]
