Commander Arthur Edward Francis Lovell, (10 October, 1901 – 8 June, 1940) served in the Royal Navy.
As with many men born c. 1899 or later, his Service Records at The National Archives do not reflect activity between 1931 and 1939 or so.
Life & Career
In 1921, it was noted that Lovell was good at sketching, and was "quiet, has not shown up much." I'd think I may be related, except this man "play[ed] cricket moderately."[1]
Lovell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1923.[2]
In 1930, Captain A. Cunningham noted that Lovell was "perhaps too kindly & lenient; v. tactful : pleasant".[3]
Lovell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1931.[4]
On 25 April, 1932 Lovell was appointed in command of the two "L" class boats in Group "D" Submarines in Reserve at Portsmouth.[5]
Lovell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1936.[6]
World War II
Lovell was lost with the sinking of H.M.S. Glorious on 8 June, 1940.
