H.M.S. Sterling was one of sixty-seven "S" class destroyers built for the Royal Navy as the Great War was ending.
Service
Sterling recommissioned in Reserve at Chatham on 24 August, 1920.[6]
She was re-commissioned on 7 February, 1925 for service with the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla of the Atlantic Fleet.[7]
Re-commissioned at the Nore on 7 January, 1927 for service with the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla on the China Station.[8]
Re-commissioned at Hong Kong on 1 October, 1929 for continued service with the Eighth Destroyer Flotilla.[9]
In June of 1933, her bell was one of about 100 surplus bells announced as being for sale at prices ranging from £1 to £10. Preference would be given to those offers from men with a special consideration in the bell in question.[10]
Captains
Dates of appointment are provided when known.
- Lieutenant in Command Lawrence F. N. Ommanney, 5 May, 1919 – 11 July, 1919
- Lieutenant & Commander Francis T. Hare, 15 July, 1919[11] – 6 November, 1919
- Commander Geoffrey N. Henson, 6 November, 1919[Inference] (transferred in from Tenedos)
- Commander Clement R. Dane, 1 November, 1919[12] – 8 January, 1920[13] (and in charge of a group of destroyers in reserve)
- Commander Arthur A. Scott, 8 January, 1920[14][15] – 15 July, 1921 (and for command of a group of T.B.Ds. in reserve)
- Lieutenant-Commander Brian C. Gourley, 11 July, 1921[16] – 20 February, 1922[17]
- Lieutenant-Commander Frederick Medway, 10 July, 1924[18] – 21 August, 1924[19] (temporary, for Reserve Fleet Exercises)
- Lieutenant-Commander Bernard A. W. Warburton-Lee, 7 February, 1925[20] – 30 March, 1926[21]
- Lieutenant-Commander Stephen H. T. Arliss, 30 March, 1926[22] – February, 1929[23]
- Lieutenant-Commander Frank C. Husband-Clutton, 3 March, 1931[24][25] – 14 February, 1932[26]
- Lieutenant-Commander Robert Dalby, c. early 1932[27] – 1932 (transfer in from Veteran, taking ship back from China Station)
This seems somewhat jumbled in late 1919.
