William Maurice Lloyd Astwood
Commander (retired) William Maurice Lloyd Astwood, (30 May, 1897 – 5 June, 1964) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Astwood was a Special Entry to the Training Establishment in September, 1915. He passed out on 1 April, 1916 and in mid-May was appointed to the battleship Hibernia. In May 1917 he was placed in the battlecruiser Princess Royal.[1]
In February 1918 Astwood was appointed to the sweeping sloop Berberis. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 April, 1919. In 1920 he was placed in command of M.L. 479. In 1923, he served in Combat Motor Boats.
Astwood was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 April, 1927.[2]
World War II
Astwood was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander on 30 May, 1942.[3]
In October 1944, he was treated at Haslar Hospital for bilateral varicose veins. Treatment would continue, sporadically into 1948.
