He was educated at the Glasgow Academy. In 1895 Mitchell received a "free studentship of the value of £30 per annum" and a "bursary of £50 per annum tenable for three years, awarded to the candidate of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, who comes out first in order of merit amongst the competitors".[1]

On 1 January, 1911, he became general manager of Cammell, Laird, and Co.[2]
