Design & Construction
The Monongahelas were ordered on 30 October, 1861. They were not identical sisters, Monongahela having slightly fuller lines amidships than Shenandoah. Their engines were contracted to Merrick & Sons.[1]
Performance
Unlike many of the warships built during the Civil War, the two Monongahelas had strong, well built hulls. Shenandoah "was reported to handle poorly under sails alone."[2]
