John Alsager Collett

Commander (Emergency) John Alsager Collett, O.B.E. (5 September, 1882 – 25 October, 1925) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in London. By the time he entered the Navy, his father was deceased.

Collett was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1903.

He resigned his commission on 25 October, 1906. On 12 March 1907 he was placed on the Emergency List.

Great War

Appointed in command of the minesweeper Lynn on 31 May 1915 until 12 February 1916.

In January 1916 he was warned to be more careful by Vice-Admiral Commanding, Eastern Mediterranean Squadron following the grounding of the minesweeper Lynn.

In 1923 he was awarded £200 on the recommendation of the Royal Commission on Awarded & Inventions in respect to his invention of an automatic tilting gun mounting on a pedestal, which in 1917 was referred to as the Collett Hinged Gun Pedestal. Presumably, this was an anti-aircraft appurtenance.
