I am very sorry indeed to hear about Vanguard. It is too sad to think of that fine ship and all those fine fellows as gone. Will you please let the survivors know of my very deep sympathy with them in the loss of their ship and their shipmates. I fear that we shall never know the cause, but it is probably cordite, though it will not do to let this idea get about and will be better to let it be supposed it was German machinations.[..]
