Hugh Bradley Barton

Commander (retired) Hugh Bradley Barton, R.N. (27 September, 1858 – 16 October, 1921) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Entered Britannia with the entry term of January, 1872 ranked 23 of 39 successful candidates for Naval Cadetships.

Barton passed the Royal Naval College in December 1879.

In mid-December 1881, he was noted to have an excessive wine bill.

Barton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 29 June, 1883.

In July 1888, he suffered a retinal injury.

Barton completed a one year appointment as first lieutenant in the turret ship Dreadnought when she paid off on 5 September 1894. He was appointed to Devonport Barracks, where Admiral Fremantle noted that he ably assisted Captain Johnstone in greatly improving the uniform standards of the men.

After some time in the Coast Guard, Barton was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 13 October, 1902. Barton committed suicide "whilst of unsound mind" on 16 October, 1921.
