H.M.S. Essex was one of ten armoured cruisers of the Monmouth Class completed between 1903 and 1904.

Service

Essex was first commissioned on 22 March 1904 and was added to the Second Cruiser Squadron.

An artificer recalled his time in Essex, apparently in 1909-11, as one marked by an unfortunate stigma:[9]

She was a hot-bed of sodomy. When we used to go ashore up Queen's Street, if a Seaman or a Stoker went along with Essex on his cap, the harlots used to put their aprons over their sterns as a sign of disgust.

Essex joined the Fourth Cruiser Squadron some time in 1913.

Essex joined the Seventh Cruiser Squadron around June, 1915. Shortly thereafter, she joined Cruiser Force I (also known as 9 C.S.).
