H.M.S. Egeria was one of six Fantome Class composite screw sloops completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
Upon her completion, Egeria ventured out to serve on the China Station.[5]
She re-commissioned at Hong Kong on 1 January, 1878.[6]
After Charles Johnstone paid her off on 11 October, 1881 the ship spent several years out of service in Devonport before Pelham Aldrich was placed in command in October 1886.[7]
In July 1890, Commander Arthur Mostyn Field was placed in command as part of the Australian surveying service.
Egeria was re-commissioned at Sydney on 10 December, 1889.[8]
