Eric Valentine Frederick Radclyffe Dugmore
Captain Eric Valentine Frederick Radclyffe Dugmore (21 January, 1875 – 7 October, 1954) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Life & Career
Dugmore was promoted to Lieutenant on 22 June, 1897.[1]
On 7 April, 1905, he was appointed in command of the Yangtze gunboat Kinsha. He was superseded on 8 February, 1906.[2]
Dugmore was promoted to Commander on 31 December, 1908.[3][4]
Dugmore was appointed to the armoured cruiser Aboukir on 4 April, 1911 as commander and was appointed as captain of the ship on 15 December, 1911. He left her briefly to command Eclipse from 19 to 25 April, 1912, but then returned to Aboukir and remained in command until 1 June, 1912 when he was sent to the Royal Naval College in Greenwich.[5]
Great War
On 1 August, 1914, Dugmore was appointed to the Diadem Class first class protected cruiser Argonaut. On 23 March, 1915 he was appointed to command the armed merchant cruiser Ebro.[6]
Dugmore was promoted to Acting Captain on 16 September, 1916.[7]
Dugmore was promoted to Captain on 31 December, 1916.[8]
On 1 February, 1917, Dugmore left Ebro when he was appointed as captain of the third class protected cruiser Proserpine, which was serving in the Middle East. He was invalided from her on 31 October, 1917 and sent back to England in the hospital ship Nevarra, suffering from a "tropical debility". His recovery at Haslar was protracted, and on 24 October, 1918 was declared fit for shore service only.[9]
Post-War
Dugmore was finally declared fit on 3 April, 1919, but it was recommended that he not be given an appointment in the tropics.[10]
In August 1919, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Galatea.
He was appointed in command of the aircraft carrier Eagle on 12 March, 1920, and commissioned her on April 6.[11]
World War II
Dugmore was called up to serve on the Recruiting Board of the Universities and Colleges of Hull on 5 September, 1939.[12]
