Edward William Boyd Sim

Captain Edward William Boyd Sim, (3 March, 1899 – 15 December, 1941) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

His father no longer living, Sim named his step-father, A. J. Spencer, a stockbroker, as his guardian when he joined the Royal Navy in January, 1912.

Upon the outbreak of war, Sim was passed out of the Training Establishment and appointed to the first class protected cruiser Amphitrite. She paid off on 22 June, 1915 and he was appointed to the battleship Barham on 22 July 1915. He would fight in her at the Battle of Jutland. He undertook a short training course in Torpedo Control at H.M.S. Vernon in late August 1917 and was placed in the destroyer Brisk.

Sim was wounded in Brisk on 2 October, 1917 when the destroyer struck a mine that had been laid by U 79 off the North Coast of Ireland. A telegram from Buncrana indicated ruptured lateral ligaments of his right knee joint. His condition was good and he was placed in a private hospital in Londonderry. While recuperating, he took T.B.D. gunnery courses and was to join M.19 on 19 May, 1918. In July, he was assigned to the destroyer Exe. He served in her through the end of the war.

Sim was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 January, 1920.

Sim was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 January, 1928.

Sim was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1933.

World War II

Sim was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1940.
