Edward Westby Vansittart
Vice-Admiral (retired) Edward Westby Vansittart, C.B. (20 July, 1818 – 19 October, 1904) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Vansittart was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 16 September, 1843.[1]
Vansittart was promoted to the rank of Commander on 23 October, 1849. He was gazetted with high praise on 11 January 1856 for service against pirates and was specially promoted to the rank of Captain with seniority of 9 January, 1856.[2]
Vansittart was appointed in command of the screw frigate Ariadne on 18 November, 1859. On 18 September 1862, Vice Admiral Milne highly commended his "judicious arrangements" in dealing with a yellow fever outbreak in Ariadne. He paid off the ship on 19 March, 1864. [3]
He was appointed in command of the ironclad frigate Achilles on 8 July, 1864. He commanded her until she paid off on 30 October, 1868.[4]
Vansittart was placed on the Retired List on 28 July, 1873 and promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 19 January, 1874.[5]
Vansittart was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 February, 1879. He would live until late 1904, dying at age 86.[6]
