Captain (retired) Edgar William Buchanan, D.S.C. (5 May, 1880 – 20 June, 1953) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Buchanan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on the Supplementary List on 1 September, 1913. He was appointed to Murray on 13 November, 1914. He left the ship on 1 February, 1916 when he was appointed to Abdiel. On 10 October, 1916 he was appointed to the patrol boat P40, to assume command upon her commissioning.[1]

From 10 July 1917 to June 1919, he commanded a Hydrophone Flotilla.

Buchanan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 September, 1921.[2]

Buchanan was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1924.[3]

Buchanan was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Captain on 5 May, 1930.[4]

World War II

He served in the Trade Division from September 1939, and reverted to the Retired List on 20 June, 1946. He suffered a fractured fibula c. February 1942.[5]
