Donald Greig
Commander (retired) Donald Greig, O.B.E., R.N. (26 March, 1886 – 27 July, 1921) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Fulham, the son of artist O. Greig.
Greig was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 April, 1907.[1]
Greig was appointed in command of the submarine A 8 on 4 January, 1910.[2] On 10 May of that year, while conducting torpedo firing exercises, the submarine "temporarily" sank off Plymouth for an hour on the bottom at 180 feet.[3] Greig was blamed by a Court of Enquiry for not maintaining control in the event, but was praised for his coolness in action in the aftermath. In November 1910, he was logged for disobedience to orders concerning his wine bill, but he was noted as being temperate.[4]
Greig resigned his commission on 6 May 1912, having been lent to the Colonial Office for service in West Africa. He was placed on the Emergency List in November.[5]
Greig was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1915. On 23 May, he was administered a Wasserman Test, an antibody test for syphilis, at Chatham Hospital. No result is recorded in his Service Record. He commanded the requisitioned auxiliary Gransha from 21 July 1915 to 12 May 1916. Thereafter, he commanded P17 for four months and was then restricted to shore service only. He spent the rest of the war in shore-based appointments.[6]
Greig was promoted to the rank of Commander in recognition of his wartime service on 11 November, 1918.[7]
Greig died in Beit Naamu[?] Hospital in Basra, of all places, in mid 1921.[8]
