Construction
Couronne was the first French battleship to be entirely built from iron, and was an improved version of the preceding Glorie class.[8]
Service
In 1881 Couronne was chosen to be converted into a gunnery training ship. The conversion was undertaken by the Arsenal de Toulon according to plans drawn up by sous-ingénieur de 1re classe Victor Cousin. In addition to a completely new armament, the Couronne's iron armor was removed and replaced by wooden planking of equal thickness, lightly-built iron poop and spar decks were added, and two boilers were removed.[9] According to Conway's, the conversion process lasted from 1881 until 1885.[10]
Couronne was replaced as gunnery training ship on 1 December, 1908 and was disarmed subsequently. In 1910 she was hulked and converted to a barracks for the atelier central de la Flotte at Toulon, a humble duty she performed for the next twenty-two years. Replaced as a barracks in 1932, she was sold to M. Bonturi for 226,100 Francs on 25 October, 1933 and broken up in 1934.[11]
