Basil Lyall Johnston
Captain (retired) Basil Lyall Johnston, (30 August, 1889 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
The son of Lt. Colonel J. Johnston of the Royal Artillery was born in Simla, India.[1]
Johnston was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 November, 1909. He qualified for torpedo duties in July, 1913. He was appointed as torpedo officer in King George V on 23 May, 1916 and fought in her at the Battle of Jutland.[2]
Johnston was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 November, 1917.[3]
Johnston was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1922.[4]
Johnston was placed on the Retired List at the rank of Captain on 2 September, 1935.[5]
World War II
Some service, likely at the Admiralty. In 1942, he misplaced an attaché case with secret papers, eliciting Their Lordship's displeasure. They were found to have been left at the Ministry of Aircraft Production, but this did not reverse the ill-will he had attracted.[6]
In 1948 he was granted permission to proceed abroad to Switzerland.[7]
