Assistant Paymaster (Royal Navy)

Assistant Paymaster was a rank in the Accountant Branch of the Royal Navy, equivalent to that of Sub-Lieutenant.

History

By Order in Council of 28 February, 1855, the rank of Assistant Paymaster was created and given to Clerks who had passed the examination for the rank of Paymaster. A passed Clerk of under four years' full pay as such became an Assistant Paymaster, 2nd Class, and above four years' became an Assistant Paymaster, 1st Class.[1]

An Order in Council of 8 November, 1918, altered the title of the rank to Paymaster Sub-Lieutenant.[2]

Uniform

After four years in that rank, the Assistant Paymaster was entitled to wear one and a half stripes.
