Arthur Frederick Vans Agnew

Commander (emergency) Arthur Frederick Vans Agnew, K.C.B. (21 September, 1865 – 1942) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Kingersley[?], Surrey.

Vans Agnew was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 January, 1889.

On 23 November 1891, he was removed from the list on account of refusal to serve when called upon to do so.

Vans Agnew was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on the Emergency List on 1 January, 1897.

Vans Agnew became a Transport Officer, assigned to the staff of the Principal Naval Transport Officer, Southampton from 7 October, 1916.

On 7 November 1917, Vans Agnew was subjected to a Court Martial on a charge of having negligently or by default hazarding the Sixth Light Cruiser Squadron. He was acquitted. It was noted in 1918 that he was getting "very deaf[?]".

Vans Agnew was promoted to the rank of Commander dated 11 Novermber, 1918.

After receiving an expression of Their Lordships appreciation for the excellence in gunnery 6 L.C.S. had attained under his command, especially their use of divisional concentration of fire under the system of master ship fire, he reverted to the Emergency List when he relinquished his duties in Boston on 16 May, 1919.

Vans Agnew died in 1942, having left no children.
