Andrew Nevill Swainson
Lieutenant Andrew Nevill Swainson, R.N. (9 January, 1889 – 1 June, 1916) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Priors, Hardwick, Swainson entered the Navy direct from Conway. His father was Reverend Alfred Swainson, but upon his death, guardian L. H. Hewlett was penned in as Andrew's guardian.
Swainson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 22 June, 1911.
On 13 August, 1913 while appointed to Hibernia, Swainson pleaded guilty at a Court Martial to a charge of being absent without leave. He was sentenced to be severely reprimanded and dismissed the ship. He was appointed to the battleship Albemarle on 22 August, where he remained until he was appointed to Hydra as first officer on 1 January, 1914.
He was superseded in Hydra on 9 September 1915. On 14 September he was appointed in command of the the "thirty knotter", H.M.S. Flirt. Swainson was cautioned by Vice-Admiral, Dover to be more careful after colliding with a Swedish steamer on 6 March, 1916. Swainson drowned on 1 June, 1916 when his whaler capsized while returning after dark to Flirt from Beachy Head.[1]
