Alfred Wyndham Paget
Admiral SIR Alfred Wyndham Paget, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., D.S.O., Royal Navy (20 March, 1852 – 17 June, 1918) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Paget was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 28 December, 1877.[1]
On 17 May, 1887, he was appointed in command of the gunboat Starling.[2]
Paget was found to need glasses in July 1893 to correct his short-sightedness.[3]
With this hurdle cleared, he was appointed to the screw sloop Dolphin on 11 August, 1893.[4]
Captain
Paget was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1896.[5] In September of that year, the Admiralty expressed their appreciation of his prepared report on the defences of the Algerian coast.[6]
On 3 June, 1899, Paget was appointed a Companion in the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (C.M.G.).[7]
Also in June 1899, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Astræa[8] until February of 1901 when he became captain of the first class protected cruiser Endymion[9]
He took command of the battleship Royal Sovereign on 13 May, 1903.[10]
In March 1904, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Charybdis.[11]
He was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to King Edward VII dated 1 July, 1905, vice Callaghan.[12] For his services in connection with the settlement of French claims in Newfoundland Paget was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (K.C.M.G.) on 9 November.[13]

Paget was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 October, 1906.[14]
On the occasion of King George V's coronation he was appointed an Additional Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 19 June, 1911.[15]
Paget was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 March, 1911, vice Lambton.[16]
Paget was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 8 December, 1913, vice Denison.[17]
Paget's name was mentioned as a possibility for the position of First Naval Member of the Australian Commonwealth Naval Board, but Admirals Sir George F. King-Hall and Sir Reginald F. H. Henderson were opposed.[18]
Great War
In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 14 September, 1914.[19] He was granted a temporary Commission as Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve on 18 September, 1914.[20]
He was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) on 4 June, 1917.[21]
Paget died at 34 Hans Road, Chelsea, on 17 June, 1918, aged sixty-six, after a bout of indifferent health.[22] Lady Paget died on 13 September from pneumonia aged just thirty-three, leaving behind the couple's eleven year old daughter,[23] Honor Cecilia Paget.
