Alexander Stuart Mackay
Captain R.N.R. (retired) Alexander Stuart Mackay, R.D., R.N.R. (12 July, 1880 – 13 March, 1959) served in the Royal Naval Reserve.
Life & Career
Mackay was awarded a first-class Gunnery certificate in October 1909 and a second-class in Torpedo in December 1909. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 14 December, 1910.[1]
Mackay was appointed to the battlecruiser Tiger on 27 August, 1914, perhaps not arriving there before 3 October. He would serve in her until perhaps even 4 October, 1918, seeing action at the Battle of Jutland, for which service he was specially commended for "dealing with a fire above the six-inch magazine", and being specially recommended for promotion by Captain Rudolf Walter Bentinck on 8 November, 1916. Bentinck placed such importance on this endorsement that he saw to it that Rear-Admiral Commanding First Battle Cruiser Squadron Richard Fortescue Phillimore co-signed it.[2]
Mackay was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 14 December, 1918. He was demobilised on 21 February, 1919.[3]
Mackay was promoted to the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 31 December, 1921. In 1923, he reported information on the selection of advance bases for the American fleet, and received the thanks of the Director of Naval Intelligence[4]
Mackay was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Captain R.N.R. on 22 August, 1928.[5]
World War II
On 7 January 1941, Mackay was appointed to Eaglet for duty with ocean convoys as a Commodore, Second Class. We have no insight into whether he ventured to sea, but he was likely in Liverpool.[6]
Mackay was a man who enjoyed action and purpose. When he responded to a broadcast mailing to R.N.R. personnel in 1948, he reported that he was living in New Barnet, Herts, and considered himself ready for general service, even specifying he would hope not to get an office job unless strictly necessary. He was removed from the Retired List on 29 November, 1954.[7]
