The Technical History and Index, subtitled A Serial History of Technical Problems Dealt With By Admiralty Departments, was a series of official publications prepared by the Technical History Section and other departments of the Admiralty in the years following the Great War. There are incomplete sets at The National Archives, Kew,[1] and the Caird Library at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.[2]

The uneven nature of the topics for each part is incredible. Those of "Defensive Armament of Merchant Ships" and "Fire Control in H.M. Ships" seem so expansive and weighty when set alongside "Darkening Ship" that one must wonder what bureaucratic underpinning could envisage them as chapters to be so blithely interspersed in a record of any kind.
