The rank of Navigating Sub-Lieutenant was a commissioned rank of the Royal Navy. It replaced that of Master's Assistant by Order in Council of 26 June, 1867.[1] In 1879 Navigating Sub-Lieutenants were given the option of becoming Lieutenants on promotion or Navigating Lieutenants. The last Navigating Sub-Lieutenant on the Active List appears to have been Edward W. Collier, who was promoted to the rank of Navigating Lieutenant on 11 March, 1882, with seniority of 2 July, 1881.
