The rank of Navigating Lieutenant was a commissioned rank of the Royal Navy. It replaced that of Master by Order in Council of 26 June, 1867.[1] In 1879 Navigating Sub-Lieutenants were given the option of becoming Lieutenants on promotion or Navigating Lieutenants. The last Navigating Lieutenant on the Active List appears to have been Frederick W. E. H. Smith, who was promoted to the rank of Staff Commander on 25 May 1892.
