Captain James Charles Wauhope, R.N., Retired (15 July, 1884 – 3 December, 1960) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Wauhope was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant on 15 April, 1904.[1]

He served in submarines, appointed either to, or to both of A 5 and C 35 on 1 February, 1909 and could speak French in a colloquial manner by 1910. Thought not a clever man, he was a "sound and reliable S/M commander."[3].
Great War
On 14 March, 1917, Wauhope was commended in despatches by the Vice-Admiral Commanding, East Mediterranean Squadron Sir John M. de Robeck for his service during December, 1915 to January, 1916.[4]
Wauhope was appointed in command of the Template:UK-Q4 on 9 October, 1916. He remained in her until 15 August, 1917 shortly after being cautioned for a collision between her and S.S. Rimutaka. He spent three more days in her, now renamed Carrigan Head supervising the fitting out of ships, and to take command of a convoy "on commissioning", which presumably meant the commissioning of the sweeping sloop Asphodel which he was placed in command of just three days later and where he remained through the end of the war.[5]

Wauhope was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1919.[6]
On 12 December, 1921, Wauhope volunteered in the Royal Australian Navy and was loaned to them for two years from 17 January, 1922. Noted as having a strong physique, Captain Sterling thought his influence on junior officers was not what it should be, as he lacked tact. Another appraiser commented that he possessed "common sense but not great brain power." Wauhope was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 10 October, 1922.
