In July 1908, Dampier recorded that Hickman was "at his best in an emergency."[4]
Hickman was promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 June, 1911.[5]
Hickman was appointed to the Benbow as gunnery officer on 20 June, 1914, and would serve in her until 16 October, 1916, seeing action at the Battle of Jutland.[6]
Hickman was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1916.[7]
Hickman was appointed in command of the light cruiser Undaunted on 3 January, 1918.[8]
He became ill and was removed from command, dying of pneumonia at the Naval Hospital in Leith even before he was officially superseded in command of Undaunted.
