Lieutenant-Commander Hardinge Lilford Shephard (23 April, 1882 – 13 January, 1915) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in India, Shephard was fluent in French. He gained three months' time on passing out of Britannia.

Shephard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1903.

Shephard was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1911.

On 1 November, 1912 Shephard was appointed to Challenger as first officer and as Acting Interpreter in French, being based in Gibraltar. On 1 June 1913, he brought his interpretation skills to Grafton. On 21 November 1914, Shephard was appointed to the armed merchant cruiser Viknor (initially called The Viking) as Acting Interpreter in French.

Shephard was killed when Viknor was lost (possibly mined) on 13 January, 1915.
