Commander Hugh Pigot Williams, of the first-class battleship “Resolution” serving in the Channel squadron, entered the Royal Navy in 1871, became Lieutenant in 1880, and Commander in 1893. The Commander in a modern battleship fills one of the most arduous of posts, and many ships carry two commanders, the second for navigating duties.
