Commander (retired) Charles Ernest Maconochie, C.B.E., R.N. (27 January, 1886 – 19 April, 1952) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Edinburgh, the son of Charles Maconochie, Sheriff Substitute and Advocate. His first naval service was a half year in Juno of the Cruiser Squadron in 1902 followed by nearly three years in the battleship Bulwark.

Maconochie spent two and a half months in Victorious before moving briefly to Osprey and then to the destroyer Foyle for a year before he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1907.

Maconochie resigned on 24 May 1910, and was invited to join the Emergency List, which he did, only to proceed to Singapore and eventually resign on 1 December, 1911.

He was appointed to Columbine as Flag Lieutenant to Admiral Lowry from 1 December 1914 to 1 April, 1916 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1915. On 1 April, he was appointed to Crescent as Flag Lieutenant-Commander to Admiral Hamilton. He remained in Crescent and continued his work ni the same capacity for Admiral Sir Burney, Commander-in-Chief Rosyth on 13 October 1917.
