The Brazilian Navy was formed in the early 1800s thanks to the Portuguese monarchy seeking shelter there from the Napoleonic Wars and gained stature from its role in the following war of independence.

A naval rivalry with other South American powers and an influx in capital from exports sparked excited growth in the early 1900s.
