The Distinguished Service Order is a British decoration awarded to armed forces personnel. It was instituted in 1886, and Companions of the order ranked after Companions in the Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.) at the time. It could only be awarded to commissioned officers in the Navy, the Army, and the Marines. [1]
