Charles Henry Alfred Gleig
Commander (Emergency) Charles Henry Alfred Gleig, R.N. (22 March, 1862 – 26 June, 1945) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Gleig was born in Marylebone, London, the son of Major Henry Lockhart Gleig & Phoebe Bel Collard,[1] though his service record noted this as Paddington.[2]
The 1871 Census listed his residence as being on George Road Bertozerie, St. Peter Port, Guernsey, Guernsey and Adjacent Islands, Channel Islands.[1]
As a Midshipman, he served in the corvette Boadicea on the Cape of Good Hope and West Africa Station from 1878 to 1882.
On 1 October 1886 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. This was altered, after a January 1890 Court Martial for writing a "highly improper letter to his commanding officer" to 1 October 1887. He was also dismissed the ship for this offence. He requested that he be retired in the aftermath, but this was refused.[3]
On 31 August 1888 at St. John Fitzroy Square, Middlesex he was married to to Caroline Amelia Chapman. They would be divorced in 1906.
In 1891 he resided at 48, Victoria Park, Plymouth, Devon, England, being employed as a journalist.
In 1915 he was placed on Emergency List as Lieutenant-Commander with seniority of 1 October 1895. He continued to serve at Marseilles as a transport officer.[4]
In recognition of his wartime service, he was promoted to the rank of Commander (emergency), dated 11 November, 1918.[5]
Gleig was removed from the Navy List for non-report in 1929, but was restored the following year. By 1940, he was still listed.[6]
